Project reflection
In this project, we worked in pairs to create a graphic novel interpretation of a novel called Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Brave New World is about a dystopian society where technology has eliminated all passion and family is a foreign concept. During the process of this project, I developed my sense of evidence, perspective, and clarity in order to understand how to delve into the content of the book and then interpret it for the larger audience.
I think I improved the most in expanding my perspective. This book was a refreshing experience for me because before I had never dealt with ideas that were so completely alien to me. It was really hard for me to imagine a life without family and with no major attachments to other people, because those attachments are what my life is completely built around. Growing up without a family, with just my peers to hold on to, would have been an extremely tough experience for me. My family makes up almost all of my mental and emotional support, and without them I would have been lost growing up. So one can imagine that as I was reading Brave New World I was having trouble wrapping my head around the idea. However, eventually I could visualize it in my mind and now it is easier for me to think from the perspective of a character in Brave New World.
Having a new perspective helped me improve in resemblance. Using resemblance in a graphic novel means portraying characters as the book describes them, even while certain details about the characters are left out. Developing a new perspective helped me see how the characters are supposed to look according to the views of the Brave New World society. For example, in my graphic novel I render all of the characters that conform to the Brave New World society as Alphas because in my graphic novel they wear grey (Alpha is the highest caste in this society). These characters include Bernard, Henry Foster, and the Director. Although Huxley made a point of identifying Bernard as an Alpha, the book does not explicitly say whether Henry Foster and the Director are Alphas or not. I used resemblance to make that decision to portray them as Alphas, because I know that they were meant to be portrayed as powerful and important. I have undergone a great expansion in my knowledge of resemblance and other content skills, compared to before this project when I did not even know what they meant.
I am really proud of what I accomplished in this project. However, for our next project, I would like to improve my writing and I would also like to have the opportunity to discuss the more abstract concepts in the book with my classmates. I could have put more effort and detail into helping my partner write so that we could sound more professional and knowledgeable, so next time I will try harder to not get distracted and stressed so that I can focus on putting out beautiful work. Finally, I would appreciate more opportunities to discuss the concepts with my classmates because I think that would help me understand the content at a deeper and more complex level.
