9TH GRADE HUMANITIES
Welcome to Humanities!
In this course we explore questions regarding the individual's relationship with civilization, society, and government. We integrate language arts, historical thinking, and skills and perspectives from other humanities and social science disciplines. By the end of the course, students will be capable of writing a well-structured independent research paper, delivering a convincing academic presentation, and working effectively within a high-functioning research group. We will develop these skills by studying both our own and other civilizations, societies, and governments, and relevant cultural elements, including literature, philosophy, history, theater, and film. Our project-based learning method examines these topics as they manifest in a range of cultures and time periods. We will integrate these understandings of past cultures into an examination of our own culture and government, in order to become better-informed citizens of our own community in Durango.

2. Speak the truth. We will be tackling difficult questions that often do not have a simple answer. We often may find ourselves in disagreement with one another. In this area of study, the ability to speak your truth is a challenging but liberating process. This also encompasses day-to-day honesty. For example, if you haven’t done the reading required, please inform me before the class discussion begins.
3. Risk It We encourage and support each other in taking risks. Whether you fear speaking during a class discussion, or feel like you’re no good at grammar or outlining, THIS is the place for you to face your fears head-on and to turn your weaknesses to strengths. As your teacher, I’ll be taking risks (telling silly jokes, designing new lesson plans), and along with your classmates, I expect you to take risks as well.
