Why did I choose Animas High School?
There are so many reasons why I chose Animas High School. Up until a week before school started, I was set in the idea that going to Durango High School would be the best choice for me. During the previous year I had played with the idea of going to Animas, done a shadow day, learned about the school, but I had switched my mind several times and remained indecisive. I wanted to go to Animas because it seemed like a great environment where I could learn in a way I enjoyed, but I was torn because most of my close friends were going to DHS and both of my older siblings had. Animas was a scary, unknown subject for me. Towards the end of the summer, I had come to conclusion that I should just do what I was most comfortable with: go to DHS. Then I changed my mind in the space of an hour, right before my family was going on a road trip, a week before school. When I made the decision, and cut myself off from going to school with most of my friends, I made it because I wanted to be in an environment where I felt happy. I did not feel happy as I should in the normal school environment, and I wanted to change that. That change came through Animas, where everybody treats each other like a family, where we learn in a way that is relevant to us and our future, where learning is fun.
My Experience:
My experience at Animas High School has been extremely positive so far. It has been an amazing change from Miller Middle School mainly because of the difference in the environment and how the academics are relevant to the real world. Animas’ friendly environment is probably the main reason I enjoy going there. People treat each other as family, and everybody at Animas wants to learn. In addition, the academics consist of topics that are actually relevant to the real world. In Humanities we just finished a unit that studied socialization, which is a topic that one has to understand in order to understand the way we coexist with other people.
I love Animas because of its challenging academics and nurturing environment that make it unique as a school.
