The focus of this project was to learn about current events Spanish speaking countries and to apply our vocabulary and knowledge of conjugation in the process. In the beginning, we wrote a 2 page newspaper article in Spanish on a current event in a Spanish speaking country, for example, Costa Rica. I wrote my article on an anti-abortion parade in Costa Rica, which was supported by the Roman Catholic Church.
I really enjoyed researching current events in Costa Rica because I got to learn more about Costa Rican politics and how the people there feel about controversial issues like abortion. A lot of the people there do not support abortion, partly because of their religion and the sway the Roman Catholic Church holds over them because of this. It was also fascinating to learn about the origin of this influence, through learning about how Catholicism first came to Costa Rica.
In this project, I struggled a lot with actually writing the essay, most of all, conjugating the verbs. At one point, I got so tired and confused that I forgot how to conjugate verbs in the present tense, and I had to take a break. Fortunately, afterward I could remember how to conjugate again and was able to continue writing my essay. Although I had some difficulty, I do think that writing the essay helped me expand my vocabulary and confirm what I know about conjugation, and that my writing has improved since the essay I wrote for el Dia de los Muertos.
When I finished writing my essay for this project, I realized that, like all things, I learn well with repetition. During the process of writing the essay, I felt a lot better about my writing compared to the previous essay I wrote, on el Dia de los Muertos. In that project, sometimes I felt I was just stabbing in the dark on how to structure my sentences and that I didn’t really know what I was doing. I think writing another essay and getting more help and feedback from Janae (my Spanish teacher) on it helped ingrain the knowledge in my mind, and now I am a lot more confident. In the future, with any concepts I do not understand, I will use repetition because I know that it is a strategy that is particularly effective for me as a learner.
We have spent about a month learning about current events in Spanish speaking countries. During that time, I have attained knowledge that will help me in the future if I ever travel to a Spanish speaking country. Current events are part of history. Knowing the history of that country will help me further understand the dynamics of that country, which will help me interact more effectively with the people of the country. In the long run, the knowledge I gained in this project could help me become a better traveler and a better world citizen.
