My Speech on the Climate Change Bill:
Thank you for welcoming me to the floor. I am John Cornyn and I will be addressing bill number 3-2016, the Full Expansion of Cap and Trade.
While action needs to be taken to help increase our country’s energy independence, I truly believe that Americans have the ingenuity and initiative to conceive much better alternatives to cap-and-trade legislation, which would completely devastate our economy.
In their research about the consequences of cap-and-trade legislation, the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) has found that any kind of cap-and-trade legislation implemented in Texas would dismantle our economy by killing almost 200,000 jobs, just in the state of Texas. As a result, Texan electricity bills would rise in price by close to 54%, and up to $40 billion dollars would be lost. I can assume with confidence that the consequences of this legislation in other states would be similarly catastrophic.
Although I think this whole bill is unnecessary and harmful, Section 5, Sub-section B again shows how unrealistic this bill is. Not only does it impose a cap-and-trade policy on the companies that sustain the economy of many states, it also demands that if that policy is enforced, all of the proceeds gathered go back to the ‘green economy’. I support an all-of-the-above energy strategy, but that means that the government cannot favor one energy source over another. We cannot waste taxpayer money on companies that cannot carry their own weight.
I support legislation that strives to decrease our country’s dependence on foreign oil, which can mean investing in alternative energy sources as well as traditional ones. With the goal of increasing our energy independence and the great asset of American ingenuity, any environmental issues can be resolved without one-size-fits-all regulations like this bill that make no economical sense whatsoever. We have an obligation to American families that are depending on us to vote NO on this bill.
